Four Experts Share their Best Practices for Implementing Automation

The benefits of automation are well known but upon reaching the implementation stage, the best practices may be a little less certain - especially for those on their first automation venture. Here, four Nordic-based automation experts look upon their personal experiences to share their best practices for successfully introducing these technologies into the workflow.

Einar Michaelsen, Nordic Automation Manager, Santander

“I’m of the belief that when implementing automation you should think big, start small, scale fast. This is alongside more traditional practices like involving IT early; that’s something we had to learn the hard way in our Norwegian implementation. The last thing would be to experiment and be creative with your solution and that it’s okay if you fail on some techniques or applications - it is a learning process.”

“We identified several different angles that we need to take into consideration when implementing and deploying RPA platform. If you miss any of these main angles, you will get lost or experience problems. One is that you take a holistic approach and don’t forget the impact on the people and work profiles involved. Another is remembering that transparency and communication is vital; make sure that progress is transparently communicated to all relevant parties, including the people who are working in your organisation as well as your customers.”

“I believe that as a start-up, you should go into deep learning. In utilising a higher volume of inputs and more information, you can use that data to provide a better outcome later in the process. Deep learning provides new areas for you to learn about how a user behaves. It also allows you to see deviations in images and detect fraud. You use a credit card in the same way most of the time, but when there is a deviation the system can notice them and decide the probabilities of fraud. You will always want to improve your business and predict what’s coming next.”

“When implementing, the focus should really be on whether you can make a forecast or a prediction on something and then act on it. Can you change your process so that you can use this knowledge?  You can do a lot of interesting projects but if it’s not possible to use this prediction in any way, it’s not worth using a lot of money to try to predict something. Moving into the production phase, you really need to remember that this is IT, which requires maintenance. There are running costs.  Sometimes people think of this as an extra employee and just like real employees need training, the machines and the algorithms need training.  You really need to make a budget that’s not unrealistic.”
