It doesn’t matter if you’re late to the AI party, as long as you show up with a plan, says Lee Coulter
“Intelligence is intelligence. It will never be artificial because then it wouldn't be intelligence,” says Lee Coulter. “It can be machine based, it can be biological, but it will never be artificial.”
Coulter, who is CEO at Ascension Shared Services and chair of IEEE’s Working Group on Standards in Intelligent Process Automation, is adamant that AI should refer instead to augmented intelligence—the recruitment of machine intelligence for the purposes of extending human intellect.
In this episode of the AI Network Podcast, Coulter joins podcast host Seth Adler for a robust conversation on why a staggering 40 per cent of task automation pilots are failing. And it all comes down to mentality, says Coulter.

“40 per cent of task automation pilots are failing because they’re too grandiose,” he says. “It’s a waterfall IT mentality, when it should be an agile business process mentality.”
Instead, leaders should be asking themselves what features and functionalities matter most to the various players involved and adopting a taxonomical approach to automating, says Coulter. Failing to deliberate in this way will result in your competitors racing ahead of you, he adds.
“The allure of cost reduction, and other benefits of task automation, can be appealing and override that nagging at the back of your head that says, ‘we really should be more deliberate about this.’”
